Khuntai Restaurant @ Permatang Tengah, Butterworth

April 7, 2009 · Posted in Asian Delicacies

A night over the weekend, we were together with Bear’s family to have an early birthday celebration for Mr bear’s mum. The restaurant was packed to the brim, we got no choice but to take the table outside the restaurant.

If you don’t mind the hot mugginess and nasty mosquitoes, it was kinda fun dining outside the restaurant in atap hut (thatch made from Nipah Palm), bamboo chairs and table.

Ambarella Juice – (RM14)

Cool and refreshing Ambarella juice with sour plum. (Spondias Dulcis or Buah Kedondong in Malays)Nevertheless, this is indeed not the best. The juice was a tad bland =.=’

Coconut Drink – (RM3.80)

I doubted the coconut has been refrigerated for quite some time… …eyucks!

Mango Kerabu – (RM9)

Spicy, sweet and sour mango salad. A medley of taste sensations, great way to start off our meals. The best I’ve tasted so far was from Serdang, Kedah – home run family restaurant, famed with its famous fried porridge.

Papaya Kerabu (Som Tam) – (RM6)

This spicy salad was very disappointing. It has a strong unpleasant taste. Not recommended.

Deep Fried Kangkung (Water Spinach) – (RM6)

New and special to me, never knew Kangkung can be served in this way. Crispy and delicious, worth a try.

Black Pepper Crab – (RM29.25)

Another disappointment, it was not up to par… … lack of spicy and fragrant pepperish flavor : (

Thai Curry Crab – (RM29.25)

This was awesome!! Tasted real good. Surprisingly, it was not spicy at all. Finally, Khuntai has something could satisfy my taste bud ^^

Lumpanan Chicken – (RM18)

Seafood Tomyam Soup – (RM32)

There are two types of tom yam, the clear broth tom yam and the red version. We had the red tom yam. Piping hot, sour, and spicy with chunks of squid, fish and prawns.

Thai Style Steamed Fish – (RM63)
Sour, hot and sweet flavor gave us a real kick. It was fresh and not fishy at all. But again, I still prefer the one in Serdang, Kedah. (Oh o… no photo for the fish. We forgot to snap one, hehe)

Steamed Seafood – (RM35)

Steamed clams and squids in garlic broth. Nothing spectacular, the clams weren’t that juicy and it had just a very little clam taste.

Birthday Cake

The dessert of the night was the blueberry cheese cake from Secret Recipe. We first handed over the cake for them to keep in refrigerator upon arriving the restaurant, later once we were ready to light on the birthday candles they turned on the music, the birthday song!! Lovely, wasn’t it?

The Bill

Overall, it is an average Thai restaurant. Way too pricey, anyway the service is good. Well… still will come back again, for sure. (Craving for the curry crab : p)
